Overview
Seattle is wedged between Puget Sound and Lake Washington with Mount Rainier looming to the south, and it manages to be a major tech capital and an outdoors town at once. Amazon and Microsoft anchor an enormous employment base, while ferries, kayaks and alpine trailheads sit within an hour of downtown. The city invented modern American coffee culture and grunge, and both attitudes persist in a place that dresses casually and reads a lot. Grey drizzle dominates from October to May, then summer delivers some of the most beautiful weather in the country. Costs are high but Washington has no state income tax.
