Overview
Malacca was the great entrepot of the Spice Route, controlled in turn by Malay sultans, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, and each left visible traces in the UNESCO listed centre. Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture is strongest here, showing in shophouse architecture, nyonya cooking and beaded embroidery. The city sits on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, two hours from Kuala Lumpur, and retains a walkable, small town feel. Weekend night markets bring the pedestrian Jonker Street to life, and the food is widely rated among the best in Malaysia.
