Overview
Jaipur was planned in 1727 as one of the first grid cities in India, and the old walled town still follows that geometry in its uniform pink facades. It is the capital of Rajasthan and the commercial heart of Indian craft, with whole quarters devoted to block printing, gemstone cutting, blue pottery and jewellery. The scale is manageable compared to Delhi or Mumbai, the food is distinctively rich, and hill forts ring the city on every side.
