Overview
Hobart sits at the foot of kunanyi, Mount Wellington, on a deep estuary in Tasmania, the closest Australian capital to Antarctica. It is small, historic and built largely from Georgian sandstone by convict labour, which gives the waterfront a texture found nowhere else in the country. The Museum of Old and New Art transformed the city's reputation, drawing an international audience to a place better known for wilderness. Tasmania has some of the cleanest air on earth, excellent cool climate wine and world class hiking within an hour. Costs are moderate and the pace is genuinely slow.
