Overview
Ghent is the city Bruges might have been if it had never become a museum. A medieval core of guild halls, belfry and three great towers sits along canals, but the city also has a large university, a strong music scene and Belgium's most interesting vegetarian food culture. It is smaller than Brussels, less touristy than Bruges, and arguably more liveable than either. The Flemish art heritage is extraordinary, the beer is serious and the Graslei waterfront on a summer evening is one of the finest urban scenes in northern Europe.
