Overview
Fes holds the oldest continuously functioning university on earth and a walled medieval city of around nine thousand lanes where no cars can go. Fes el Bali is a UNESCO site and still a working city of tanneries, brass beaters, weavers and bakers organised into guild quarters exactly as they were a thousand years ago. Donkeys remain the main freight transport. Outside the walls, the French built Ville Nouvelle offers wide boulevards and modern amenities. Living here means accepting a certain intensity in exchange for immersion in a culture that has changed remarkably little.
