Overview
Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and the gateway to the alps, glaciers and fiords beyond. Devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 destroyed much of the centre, and what has emerged since is one of the most deliberately rebuilt city centres in the world, mixing new architecture with restored heritage and enormous amounts of green space. The Avon river winds through the middle, punts and all, and the Port Hills give sea views within twenty minutes. Skiing, surfing, wine country and 3000 metre peaks are all within a two hour drive.
