Overview
Chicago rebuilt itself after the 1871 fire and in doing so invented the skyscraper, which is why its skyline remains the most coherent in the United States. It stretches along 42 kilometres of Lake Michigan shoreline with beaches, a continuous lakefront trail and a park system that ranks among the best in the country. Seventy seven neighbourhoods give it real cultural variety, from Polish and Mexican enclaves to a South Side that produced house music and gospel.
